A few weeks ago, I stumbled upon the flickr page of a little-known indie musician named Dev Hynes. Perhaps you've heard of him?
I'm kidding of course. Dev hynes—a.k.a Lightspeed Champion a.k.a. Blood Orange—is probably one of the most influential artists of my generation. He's collabed with Sky Ferreira and Solange (whom he subsequently had a falling out with), wrote the soundtrack to the seminal indie tumblr girl film Palo Alto, performed with Harry Styles at MSG, and released cult classic albums like Cupid Deluxe and Charcoal Baby.
Dev Hynes' photostream chronicles the early years of his career, starting in 2005 when he was still part of indie rock band Test Icicles and concluding in 2011, a few months after he released Coastal Grooves, his first album as Blood Orange. He shows snaps from 2007 when he moved to Nebraska to record under Lightspeed Champion, behind-the-scenes photos of tours and gigs, and adventures with friends to Comic-Con and Madame Tussaud's (and there are a few great cameos from Alexa Chung). It's really cool, actually, to scroll through all 14 pages of his photostream and him slowly evolve into the Dev Hynes we know today, though I do kind of miss his hair from his Lightspeed Champion days. Take a look below:
I'm pretty sure this is from one of his earlier performances as Blood Orange on It's On with Alexa Chung |
