welcome to coachella, 2009 style

Coachella weekend one has arrived.  Last year, I genuinely had a lot of fun scouring flickr for photos of Coachellas past, so I definitely wanted to put together some more archival posts this time around.  I think a lot of people tend to fixate on what celebrities and it-girls were wearing at festivals, which I completely understand (Alexa Chung at Glastonbury with her striped shirt and hunter boots lives in my head rent-free), but there's something refreshing about seeing the festival from the perspective of regular, non-hipster people who were just there for the music and vibes.

This year, I’m kicking things off with these incredible street style photos taken by Linlee Allen for Style.com, a fashion news site that was a digital landing page for magazines like Vogue and W.  Lots of people associate boho (and culturally insensitive) fashion with Coachella in the late ‘00s, and they’re not wrong, especially since how hippie-esque outfits really dominated in the coming years.  But, I think these photos do a great job of capturing how diverse festival style can be.  My personal favorites are Jessica Moreno, who was decked out in M.I.A. merch from head to toe, and Lynne Mugena, who was snapped on her way to see The Killers wearing a sarong from her hometown in Rwanda.  There’s also lots of twee-inspired looks, too, (and an appearance from Tennessee Thomas of The Like—she was truly an it-girl of this time).

You can't beat this.  So breezy and vibrant; it's perfect for Coachella.

Jessica's tribal print M.I.A. merch leggings with denim cutoff shorts is chef kiss.  She was also snapped on her to see—shocker—M.I.A.

Miss Tennessee looking cute as always

Sadly, quite a few of these photos have been lost forever when Condé Nast shut down Style.com without properly archiving it for the sin of being unprofitable. I spent hours trying to find photos of the girl with a parasol and the girl decked out in Japanese brands seen below because I could tell their fits went hard, even from the blurry thumbnail image.  But not a single blog or syndicated site had it saved in the web archive.  Alas, I’m sure I’ll stumble upon it sooner or later, but it goes to show that the internet is not as permanent as it may seem.
