in 2009, tokidoki bags, blackberrys, and ipods reigned supreme. I love seeing bits of people's hobbies and personalities come through the contents of their totes: artsy flickr users carrying sketchbooks and pens, minimalists walking around with a tube of chapstick and flip phone, travelers stashing away books and snacks in their duffles.
This is the last 'what's in my bag' installment before the Instagram age - the social media behemoth launched in October 2010 - so I view these photos as a final glimpse of a candid and messy time on the internet. No one was trying to be aesthetic, perform perfection, or style perfect flat lays. Sometimes real life looks like dirty ziploc bags, loose hairties, and shitty lighting, and it's far more interesting that way. While some people dump the contents of their bag on their mattress, others meticulously arrange their belongings before snapping a photo. It's so human.
My carpal tunnel is flaring up, so I won't wax on any longer. Here is what some people on flickr carried around with them in 2009. What did you carry back then?
